Don’t worry, we’re not going to make you sing. But just like many musical artists have to discover the type of artist they want to be, every blog owner must choose the style and tone of their blog. Beyond the design, font and how many posts you want to populate on the home page, it’s important to decide how you want your blog to sound.
Your Blog, Like Everything, Should Be About Balance
The voice of your blog should be the perfect union of professionalism and personality. You want your audience to be entertained and informed, as well as have an idea of who you are as a business owner. You don’t want to sacrifice information for the sake of a joke or entertainment and you also don’t want to forget your personality for the sake of informing your audience. Display information about your field and business with a tone that actually sounds like you.
Don’t Force It
A big mistake bloggers make is forcing a tone or voice that simply doesn’t suit them. If you’re a laid back person, than your blog can certainly be laid back. If you’re a serious business owner than you shouldn’t try to force jokes into your blog. And if you’re known for being inappropriate…you better keep those jokes for your backyard barbecues.
Keep It Simple, Silly
When in doubt, follow the K.I.S.S. acronym: Keep It Simple, Silly. Don’t overthink it. Your blog articles should feel natural and they should read in a way that sounds like you know what you’re talking about (because you do). If you’re concerned your tone is swaying too much one way, get a second opinion but always trust your gut. Your blog should reflect your goals and your expertise in your field first. After that you can begin experimenting with tone, as long as you feel like it’s properly reflects you and your style of business.
Finding your voice may not come naturally at first, especially if you haven’t done a lot of professional writing in the past. With practice and patience you’ll soon find your tone displays your business and your personality in a way that your clients connect with.
